Tobacco's Playbook
In the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, tobacco companies conducted research that confirmed cigarettes caused cancer, heart disease, and addiction. That research was buried. Meanwhile their public relations teams funded counter-studies, recruited doctors to appear in advertisements, and crafted messaging designed to create doubt about the science. This history is not ancient. The companies still exist. Many have simply moved into new markets.
